Understanding Gold Prices in Nepal
In Nepal, gold prices are determined daily by FENEGOSIDA (Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers' Association), the authorized body that sets the official retail rate each morning. FENEGOSIDA calculates the price by referencing the international London spot price, then adjusting for Nepal's import duties, transportation costs, refining margins, and the prevailing USD/NPR exchange rate. Because Nepal imports nearly all of its gold, these additional costs mean local prices are consistently higher than the global spot rate.
Gold sold in Nepal comes in two primary categories. Fine Gold, known locally as Chhapawala Suna, is 24 karat with 99.99% purity and carries a hallmark stamp—this is the benchmark price you see quoted in the market. Tejabi Gold is roughly 22 karat and is the standard alloy used in jewelry making, priced slightly lower due to reduced purity. When buying ornaments, shops typically charge the Tejabi rate plus a making charge.
Unlike most countries that quote gold per gram or per troy ounce, Nepal uses the traditional unit called a tola. One tola equals 11.664 grams. To convert, simply divide the per-tola price by 11.664 to get the per-gram rate in Nepali rupees. This unit remains the standard because it has been the customary measurement in South Asian gold trade for centuries and is deeply embedded in Nepali commercial and cultural practices.
Why is gold pricier in Nepal?
Nepal levies customs duty and VAT on gold imports, and the landlocked geography adds transportation and insurance costs. Fluctuations in the USD/NPR exchange rate further amplify price differences. On any given day, the Nepal retail price can be 5–12% above the international spot price depending on these factors.
